One of the most defining characteristics of PMR is severe stiffness, especially in the morning or after long periods of rest.
Telltale signs:
- Morning stiffness lasting over an hour.
- Feels like your muscles are “locked up.”
- Stiffness that eases slightly with movement but returns after inactivity.
Many patients report that just getting out of bed feels like a struggle. While some mild movement can help loosen up the muscles, untreated PMR can lead to long-term mobility issues.
Limited range of motion:
Over time, persistent stiffness and pain can lead to a reduced range of motion, particularly in the shoulders and hips.
Signs of mobility restriction include:
- Difficulty raising arms or reaching overhead.
- Trouble bending over or twisting the body.
- Reduced flexibility in the hips, making mobility a challenge.
Many people unconsciously limit their movements to avoid pain, which can worsen muscle stiffness and lead to further mobility decline.
