The ten worst drugs that cause kidney damage

Shitty Medications

The list of individual medications that cause kidney damage is so long that it's difficult to pinpoint the top ten. Therefore, I've chosen to list them by drug type: antibiotics, pain relievers, etc.

1. Antibiotics, including ciprofloxacin, methicillin, vancomycin, and sulfonamides.

2. Pain relievers, including acetaminophen and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs): aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen, and others available only by prescription.

3. COX-2 inhibitors, including celecoxib (brand name Celebrex). Two drugs in this class have been withdrawn from the market due to their cardiovascular toxicity: rofecoxib (brand name Vioxx) and valdecoxib (brand name Bextra). These medications are a special class of NSAIDs that were developed to be safer for the stomach, but they carry the same risk of kidney damage as other NSAIDs.

4. Heartburn medications in the proton pump inhibitor class, including omeprazole (brand name Prilosec), lansoprazole (brand name Prevacid), pantoprazole (brand name Protonix), rabeprazole (brand names Rabecid, Aciphex), and esomeprazole (brand names Nexium, Esotrex).
